Have a junk drawer in your house for things you can't deal with?
In Chinese medicine, we have a concept of where the body puts emotions and stress that it can't quite deal with. It's called the Dai Mai.
The Dai Mai (mai = meridian) is the ONLY meridian, or pathway of energy, that runs horizontally on the body. It's also referred to as the belt channel or holding channel as it wraps around the abdomen.
It's where physical and emotional excesses are held. These are not your everyday stressors, as ideally those are released on a regular basis. These are more impactful, so the body shifts these traumas from the heart down to the Dai Mai where they can be stored and processed later.
If for whatever reason, be it time, space, energy, or reluctance, we haven't been able to process these emotions, the Dai Mai becomes full. This meridian is also prone to being overloaded with dampness and phlegm, the concept of eating your feelings. All this physical and emotional excess can stagnate over time and contribute to stubborn weight gain around the abdomen. (For more on dampness, check out the journal)
Other issues common to the Dai Mai are distention and fullness of the abdomen, weakness of the lower back, pain around the umbilicus and waist and gynecological conditions like irregular menses and excess discharge.
There are many ways to shift and release energy. Acupuncture is one of those ways and points along the Dai Mai help. All treatments however are created custom for you.
